exactly, like a ram air or viper, a panel filter is just as good providing its clean, drilling a few holes under the box helps get more cold air in but will make the filter dirty quicker!
i currently have nothing on my car as the cone keeps falling off and i cant be bothered to fit it back on, itll be my downfall when dirt gets into my engine!

drilling holes in your airbox just makes you a chav. its unlikey to make any difference with regards to cold air. just make your car sound stupid

well im gonna put my 2pennies worth in...
had a paper filter on my car, soon changed that for a panel filter (brand evades me)
last week fitted a short induction kit (with heat sheild)
omg
what a difference
now Im gettin some great noises from ye 'ol turbo area
but she also spins up about 600rpm sooner
but every motah is different...
so if mine is fixed, and depending where, I should see you all at the next meet

hmmm a hard question i have the panel fitlers but a closed induction kit and use longer pipes to reach the front of the engine bay and maybe wackon a lil bonnet vent just open the casing so that the lovely cold airs rushes straight through the filter... or a cold feed to the filter..but means ya gotta be hacking holes in bodywork then .. not much fun

panel filters dont suffer from heat soak but dont take in as much air as cones, and since wen did looks come in to performance tuning?? K&N are market leaders for a reason and pipecross is derived from rally hence the foam filter as it catches the smaller dust particals
dr hillman wat makes the filter youve got thats near the block?? if its K&N or similar theyve spent a good few grand on desighning it to the best of there ability if its too close get a heat shield and a cold air feed <!-- s;-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt="

I used to think that enclosed filters were the way to go. Most of the problems with Induction Kits is that the cone is too close to the block, or the radiator, so nice warm air gets used instead of denser colder air. Panel filters are fine if you want to keep the costs of replacement down, but they don't really do much more than the standard paper filter as the standard intake system is often too restricted.
I have a GSR Induction kit on my 206 and the gains are very reasonable. I've done, and still am doing alot of development with GSR Engineering. Its an open cone that tucks down behind the fog light where cool stable air lives, the silicone hose is designed with minimal flow restriction and reasonable diameter changes to provide a torque over power increase. Most induction kits boast an impressive bhp increase, but more often than not its at the cost of torque, which is your acceleration. Cold Air Feeds to open cones are a waste of time, they provide less than 2% of the required cool air. Enclosed filters are ok, but often cause too much turbulence within the housing, even more so if the feed to the filter is corrugated.
I've tried various filters, Foam (PiperX), Cotton (K&N / Green) and Stainless steel (Powertec). All with various price tags. Believe it or not, the best filter I've found is a cheapy one from Korea (Similar to the Max Power ones). It has to be a double cone, and the gauze quality is better than the known brands, and much less restrictive too. Comes in a plain brown box with a few adapters, rather than fancy packaging and bhp claims.

heat soak shouldn`t be to much a problem on bee`s car tho as the airbox is behind the front headlights & could get a really good cold air feed onit i bought a enclosed kit for my st170 as they do get hot under the bonnet with feed from lower front grille acceleration is so much better jr filters are really good i had a jr panel filter from paul dolan @ co-ordsport they do induction kits aswell m8

When we were taking the 205 apart at the weekend we discovered the shocking state of my K&N air filter! Tried to clean it up but it's basically battered so looks like I'm gonna need something new.
When we took everything apart I was in hysterics! We found that someone's got a length of square plastic piping [pretty big!] and bolted it underneath the filter and everything to try and improve cold air intake! So, so funny. It's still there, couldn't bring myself to get rid of it! Wonder how many previous owners ago someone whacked that in there?! Legends!
I'll get a pic later if I remember <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="
