Right so, noticed theres a few here with gen7 celicas.. If you own one of these cars you've probably noticed the boot hatch struts are fairly weak, mine would barely hold the hatch up in summer and in winter you'd be pretty much holding it up yourself and i've had it crack me on the back of the head a couple of times while trying to retrieve my shopping from the boot. This winter i finally got to the end of my tether with it and bought new struts from SGS engineering in derby
Got home this evening to find they'd arrived so just been out and fitted them and i know it is litterally the least interesting change in the world but im chuffed with the results, new struts do a fantastic job and it actually requires effort to close the boot and if you lift it slightly it opens itself pretty much all the way
New struts came to £100 and i had to remove and send them the old ones as they needed the bracket off the bottom of them, old ones were not easily removed as i ended up hacksawing off the ball joints and heating up the bolt which wouldnt fit a standard size spanner and was very soft so easily rounded, in their wisdom toyota had also thread locked it to be extra unhelpful

£100? Ouch Sorry to kick you in the teeth, but I just sorted Vlad out with his new struts afew weeks ago for £36 delivered
Was from a group buy on Celica Club ( http://www.celica-club.co.uk/forum/inde ... group-buy/ ), although he isn't signed up they didnt mind me taking advantage of it and passing the group buy Paypal address over
The new struts are from a company called Kent Springs, and are graded to hold up any available spoiler for the celica (so would do the standard bootlid alone with ease... maybe too much ease!)
He went through the same hassle getting the existing struts off as you did too, luckily the new ones come with the new fitments aswell so you just put them in
Mine holds up OK despite the large TRD spoiler, although it is alittle slow in the cold weather as you said and knocked my head few times Will have to buy new ones eventually
In future if you aren't on celica club and need anything give me a shout and I'll see whats available

Well i agree £100 was a bit much but for me i was suitably pissed off enough to pay it, Im even less annoyed that it was a group buy on a forum i dont have access to... so all in all not terribly bothered.
My only real concern is i might have fixed it for someone elses benefit, if things go well in the coming months and i get a raise at work i may be finally switching the celica for something a little more tasty

Nice, so if all goes well whats in your 'more tasty' category?
Oh and Vlads selling too now aswell, so fixed it for someone else!
He didn't have to sign up by the way, I just gave him the details where to send payment! There only needs to be one sucker that pays membership <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="

ill be going for a 06/07 350Z GT
Been wanting one for a couple of years but but if things go right around pay review time it'll be the first time that it wil be within reach without completely crippling my budget

Yeah getting a 350z seems to be a general natural progression on celica club too, although the running costs etc has made afew go back to celicas afterwards aswell!

I'm aware of the costs, I've had the celica for 9yrs now, it started developing oil issues within the first year (the well known oil control ring issue) toyota never acknowledged there was a problem or even that they knew of a common problem and the engine finally blew last nov and was replaced. The new engine id guess is 1/4-1/3 better on the fuel economy and hasnt required anything more than slight top ups on oil. So for me the costs of running the Z would probably be similar or less than the cost of running the celica with the bad engine I had before
