Basic How They Work: Turbo's & Superchargers

Ok, alot of people understand how these work etc, but some don't. Here is a basic guide of how they work:

As you know a four stroke engine works by combining petrol and air together and igniting. The air is usually sucked into the engine.

Turbo's
Turbo's work by increasing the amount of air that goes into the engine, it is almost like getting a air compressor and forcing air into the engine, creating more power.

A turbo uses a turbine in the exhaust system to power the compressor which sucks the air in. The image below shows how it is hooked up:


Superchargers
A supercharger works in the exact same way, by increasing the amount of air, but superchargers unlike turbos are driven mechanically, like a belt/gear/shaft or chain.


You then have a intercooler which cools the air before it goes into the engine, otherwise you can get heat exchange from the exhaust system and it will bog down your engine.
