need some help was created by james09
got an external hard drive 4 xmas, put like 800 songs on it plugged it in to my head unit and i got didly sqwat, there is power goin to it the lil light is on and i can hear it but its sayin there is nothing on it i just plugged it in and there is music on it
HELP ????

An external hard drive? Their suppose to always have a power supply (mains adapter), only small flash drives etc can run off a single USB power supply

yea pretty sure they need an external power source unless theres battery powered ? What size is it? I have a 4gig in mine and that has loads of albums on it maby you need to down size a lil lol or get 12>240v transformer? Dunno

All 3.5 inch external hard drives need an external power supply. Most 2.5 inch external hard drives run off of the power from the USB port.
Your head unit is probably not designed to output enough power to run a USB powered hard drive and as Chris said you are constricted to solid state drives and the traditional USB pen shaped drives.
