6x9s are not the best really but you can get them cheap and thats why people buy them. Its the same with everything, if they are cheap people will buy them regardless of how good they are or are not. A decent set of components will sound better but what its really down to is how your running them and how youve set them up. 90% of people dont set up their system properly in the first place so its not always the equipement to blame.
As for not having speakers behind you because its distorts the sound or whatever then why do you have surround sound? Why do you have time alignment? Why do you think JL Audio's mini have 5.1 surround sound?

i had a set of vibes in the back of my car with a sub
sound quality was always mint tbh if your building a proffesional system id say to place the speakes properly
but if u jus want a bit of base then 6x9s and a 12" sub are an age old tried and tested method

if you put 6x9's on a sub system firstly they need to be enclosed to stop air interference from your subs secondly amp them and adjust the sound levels and frequency response to stop distortion without the subs on and at the volume you want cruisin ;) once this is set remember it and dont turn it up louder than that or you may start smelling them instead of hearin them! and thirdly with 6x9's power doesnt really matter its all in the setup you can buy a 450 watt set amp them and blow out the mid or tweeter cause only the bass cone can take that sort of power!! gotta recomend the infinity cheap range 50 per pair on a JBL 4ch amp get the set up right and the ladys will be dancin to the vocals instead of guessin what the tune is from the bass line! its right in sayin about positioning but if you wanna really show off at cruises 6x9's are the only way!!

Since having a more powerfull sub in mine the 6x9's don't make much differance! But, I'm going to port the rear shelf in mine. This should stop the 6x9's being killed by the subs! But I have to agree, a decent set of 13cm's at the frount can make all the differance if you are running a sub.

But largely, I think it depends on the car you've got and the set-up you are looking for.

And If I have to travel anywhere with the need for boot space. The 6x9's give a decent amount off bass to make the music sound half decent. Especally, if there is no sub in the boot!

But, largely its a matter of choice!!

if youve got an issue with 6x9s sharing the same air and space as your sub, then why not just add some ports in your parcel shlef?!

also, 6x9 technology, they are build with some kind of 'crossover' (i use that word losely) already, so the sound does get broken down and sent to the correct outlet anyway...
