Big Brake Conversion Completed on Scooby!!! was created by Volvocannondaleteam
Hi All,
I have been looking to upgrade the Brakes on the Scooby - After looking at all the options I went for
K SPORT 8 Pot Calipers running 330mm Disc -
Here's how the conversion went Today :-

Well to start with it was out with the old Subaru 4 pots they had alread been upgraded to Grooved Disc's and EBC Green Pads

(Available on e-bay now great upgrade for anyone with a classic shape Subaru with the old 2 pot system)

Strip off the old Subaru 4 pot Calipers two bolts through the hup into the back of the caliper.
Attatch the brake pipe clamp onto the rubber (This stops all the fluid leaking out whilst you are doing the other jobs before you fit new Braided pipes) Remove the Banjo bolt - Wipe any fluid that apears (keep away from any paint work)

To Remove the disc you have too screw two bolts into the disc and slowley pull the disc as the Bolt pushes the Disc away from the Hub assembly

Clean the Hub up paying especial interest in the surfaces were the new disc is going to sit.

Once clean give it a wash of with brake cleaner and Nice coat of Hammer right Silk Black Paint

Replace old Rubber brake hose with nice steel braided - the steel braiding stops the hose expanding under brake pressure so all of you effort goes to the Caliper/Pads

Fit the New Disc/Rotor these are handed so the grooves cut the pad as its pressed against the grooves - give them a good wash of with brake cleaner as they are sprayed with a wax oil to stop them going rusty before you fit them.

Fit the adaptor plate that locates on the standard caliper fixing points - This now allows the new caliper to come further away from the hub to allow for the 330mm Disc.

Bolt on the new LOVELY 8 POT K Sport Caliper - machined from a single bilt piece of light weight aluminium. Two allen key bolts through the caliper iinto the adaptor plate. Bleed nipples to the top balance pipe at the bottom

Undo the two pad retaining bolts silver allen key bolts slip in the new Pads these are the intermediate pad classed as sport Pads Fast Road/Track day pad best of both worlds.
Pad retain clips go under the bolts and keep pressure on the pads.

You get a series of Shims so you can ensure the caliper sits bang in the middle of the disce with equal distance either side this ensures equal wear on both the pads.
Attach bango bolt with copper washers either side to the caliper
Repeat on the other side

Top up Brake resviour - I choose to use a AP Racing Brake fluid its more expensive but will opperate upto 900c which is F1 Temps so will be fine for the scooby even on a track day.

Bleed the whole sytem fronts and rears 2 bleed nipples on each caliper the outer side of the caliper fed via a balence pipe between the two sides of the caliper. Used loads of fluid to ensure the system was completely flushed and fresh fluid feeds all the corners.

Road test time - obviously you dont jump straight on them steady aplications 30mph - to zero 6 times - 40mph - to zero 6 times - 50mph to zero six times - 60mph to Zero six times Stopp and check no Blueing on the disc - push on a little nice stead aplications at the higher speeds. Stop and check all looked fine.
Back at home up in the air again wheels off spanner check all the unions 2 main bolts/ 2 caliper bolts /Pad bolts check all brake pipes and seals for no sign of fluid quick wash round with some safe clean repeat the other side job Done.

The K sport Big Brake conversion pack was easy to work with all nicely machined parts the instructions were a little confusing -
You only read theinstructions if all else fails Right?
The only thing to watch was the Braded pipes were handed but not marked as such - you will soon find out which is left and right as if you have the wrong pipe then you will have to twist it to make it fit the banjo pipe - if it is like this then you have the wrong pipe swop them over - I got them around the wrong way first time.

The brakes are simply incredable I have not even given them a big stop yet but they have great bite even from cold no squeeling which is always a danger with this type of big brake conversion.

They pull up nice and true, Realy pleased with the conversion - bring on the Nurburgring in the summer!!!!!!!

Cheers
Andy :D

I Think it more of trying to get the balence right between as you say getting them to temper - Blue and the other way letting them glaze which is just as bad - just have to be careful.
