GUIDE - Free Anti-Virus for your PC was created by Chris CW
OK although it has been mentioned in the " Speeding Up and Protecting Your PC " topic I just wanted to go into alittle more detail with Anti-virus programs (& get input from other members too!)

OK so first... AVOID NORTON ANTI-VIRUS AND OTHER VIRUS PROGRAMS YOU MUST PAY FOR. These are normally bundled with new computers with six months free, but not only do they try waaayyy too hard and normally bog down your brand new system but you will be restricted on its use when your six months free runs out anyway! If its ran out, REMOVE IT! There is perfectly good FREE anit-virus programs out there, using one of those and a little common sense and you'll be fine...

=========

1. FREE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS

Tried and tested (recommended): AVG FREE
http://free.avg.com
Despite trying to sell you the full security works on notification bars on the program itself and on update downloads, AVG Free does its job and very effeciently. This program is used by alot of the PC maintenance companies, and Ive installed it on pretty much every PC I have ever touched since acouple of years ago. Be sure to turn off scanning and updates on start up, but to do them when you feel you have the time or the system has fully booted
UPDATE: AVG FREE 9.0 HAS BEEN RELEASED: http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus ... 20142.html
I recommend you turn off Link Scanner and Safe Surf features, as these may seriously slow down your browsing

Tried and tested: ANTI-VIR
http://www.free-av.com/
The german company ANTI-VIR was first recommended to my by NTL, may be a good alternative to AVG (above) if your OS doesnt seem to work well with it.

OTHERS:
Microsoft Security Essentials - http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

=========

2. COMMON SENSE!
Dont download random files off random people, odd MSN messages from offline friends saying "Hey check out my new sexy pics! xx" with a zip download is most likely to be from a hacked account with a virus waiting for you inside the file. Be sure where your going on the net, download it only if you need it!

Get the low down on what to avoid, and what other free anti-virus software is out there by checking out this site: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shoppi ... s-software

Lol Gritter.

+1 for AVG though, I use it on all my machines and my mum's. Recommended.

I'd also recommend Zone Alarm Free firewall to work with it.

Features

Automatic processing
Infected files are processed automatically without requiring user instructions.

Antivirus and anti-spyware engine
State of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.

Real time anti-rootkit protection
Unique "on access" technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.

Boot-time scanner
Allows you to scan your computer for infections before the operating system has started and before a virus can be activated (32-bit operating systems only).

Behavior Shield
Monitors activity on your computer using a number of sensors (file system, registry and network based) and reports/blocks any suspicious behavior.

Behavioral Honeypots
avast! sensors identify and monitor suspicious file activity on selected computers, automatically submitting files to the Virus Lab for additional analysis.

File System Shield
Real-time scanning of opened/executed files.

Mail Shield
Scans all incoming/outgoing e-mails for malware. For MS Outlook, a special plug-in is used. Other email clients are protected by a generic POP3/IMAP4/SMTP proxy. New in version 5, the proxy also supports scanning of SSL communication (gmail.com, sympatico.ca, ….)

Web Shield
Scans all visited web pages and checks all files, pages and java scripts downloaded from the internet. Thanks to the Intelligent Stream Scan feature, the Web shield doesn't slow down your web browsing.

P2P Shield
Checks files downloaded using P2P programs. - ABC, Ares, Azureus, BearShare, Bit Torrent, BitComet, BitLord, BitPump, CZDC++, Direct Connect, eDonkey, eMule, iDC++, iMesh, Kazaa, Kceasy, LimeWire, Morpheus, Opera's DC++, Overnet, Qtrax, Shareaza, SoulSeek, StrongDC++, uTorrent, Vuze, WinMX, Winny2, Zultrax.

IM Shield
Checks files downloaded while using instant messaging or “chat” programs. - AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Gadu-Gadu, gaim/Pidgin, Google Talk, ICQ, IM2 Messenger, Infium, Miranda, mIRC, MSN/Windows Messenger, Odigo, PalTalk Messenger, Psi Jabber Client, QIP, QQ, SIM, Skype, Tlen, Trillian, WengoPhone, XFire, Yahoo! Messenger.

Network Shield
Provides protection against network-based viruses. The module has two main components: a URL blocker, designed to block malicious URLs (as defined by the Virus Lab), and a lightweight intrusion-detection system.

Smart virus definition updates
Incremental updating system minimizes the size of regular update files

I use Avast (free) on my desktop and AVG (free) on my laptop. Both seem to work fine but Avast is a little bigger so slows up the laptop a bit. Fine on the desktop though. Free anti-virus ftw!

Consuming your bandwidth since 16.02.09 -> I'm so sorry
